Agent 47 - Birth of the Hitman #1

Edge of Venomverse #5

The Venomverse event is starting to feel like a bit of a damp squib, mainly because it doesn't seem to be gettng pushed as much as it could be. With Secret Empire still going on and Marvel's marketing efforts focused on Generations and Legacy, this series has had a couple of good books that have been a little overlooked. After being pretty underwhelmed by issue #1, this run has picked up pace since; we have picked up on the idea that a symbiote-clad Captain America is gathering lots of Venomised heroes from different dimensions to fight a Big Bad of some description, and the latest issue gives us Venompool. I saw this and initially thought "Really? Again?" as this is the 3rd time I can think of that our man D-Piddy has got up close and personal with the Venom symbiote.

Deadpool has been hot property since his hugely successful 2016 movie, and that had an effect on the comics, no question. For starters there were so many, with multiple Deadpool titles every month. I think we're still getting 3 books a month where he is a main character. It could be more, I'm struggling to keep track. It also had an effect on what the writers could do with him; we have seen a more sanitised version of Deadpool than we have ever seen before, sure he's still pretty irreverent, but compared with his previous adventures they have toned it down somewhat.
Let's see them do THIS with RiRi Williams...
This is where this book came as a surprise - while it's a fairly run-of-the-mill Venomverse issue, it's probably the best Deadpool book we have had in quite a while. James Stokoe's art is absolutely spot on for the story; writer Clay McLeod Chapman has taken the chance to use the Deadpool-Venom mashup to give us a gross-out tale that is illustrated in the kind of "Dude, really?" style that befits the one and only Wade Wilson. There are sentient artificial organs, copious references to the Alien franchise, and possibly the most vomiting of any comic book published so far in 2017 (sorry Secret Empire, you lost the crown). The characterisation of Deadpool is refreshingly familiar as a batshit-crazy but well-intentioned professional killer, for whom no level of self-abuse is too low in order to save the day.
Well it's good, but... maybe buy your kids something else...
As a long-time Deadpool reader, this reminded me of what made the character stick out to me in the first place, and of the unique place he holds in the Marvel universe - there are some things that you simply could not do with anyone else but him. We need more of his many titles to remember this and use it more, I get the feeling that in Chapman they have a writer who really 'gets' the character and I hope they let him loose on Mr. Wilson a bit more in future.

4.5 / 5
